A rooster is a mature male chicken. A mature female chicken is called a hen. A newly hatched chicken is called a chick. An immature male chicken is called a cockerel, and an immature female chicken is called a pullet. Chickens (Gallus domesticus) were domesticated about 8,000 years ago from Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) in southeast Asia in and around what is now Thailand. Red Junglefowl still run wild in that region of the world. It is believed that chickens were brought to the Polynesian islands from southeast Asia with the Lapita migration, about 3,300 years ago. It was assumed that they had been brought to the Americas with the Spanish conquistadors, but archeologists have identified a pre-Columbian chicken at several sites throughout the Americas, most notably at the site of El Arenal-1 in Chile, dating about 1350 AD.
